    History of the city

The main thoroughfares of Lakewood are mainly blvd with landscaped medians, with frontage roads on either side in residential districts.

It was a time when the Federal Government was not bad for something besides simply being a cash grabbing pain in the ass. At one point, sales of new home was averaging 30 houses daily. From empty fields, almost twenty thousand houses were constructed with a brand new house finished every 7 or 8 minutes, in three years.

Lakewood or “Contract City.” is a leader among California cities in provisioning services. Despite being an incorporated city, the majority of its municipal services contracts to Los Angeles County with the remainder going to other agencies and private sector.

Were you aware? Lakewood is the residence of the first Denny’s Restaurant.

The first Europeans that came to the LF region in the late 1700’s were the Spanish, who set up missions and ranchos with huge herds of cows. These lands went into Mexican control in the early 1800’s and eventually into Anglo American control in the later part of the 18th century.

In 1874, the Mexican José Serrano family resided in eleven thousand hectares of ranch – that would fall into the control of railway advocate, Dwight Whiting. In time, these ranch properties would be subdivided and sold off to settlers.

Formerly, the community was known as El Toro. In 2000, its city limits enlarged to contain Foothill Ranch and Portola Hills. This growth brought the development of commercial places and new houses.
